Broadfoot relishing glory bid

The Light Blues face Werder Bremen at Ibrox on Thursday in the first of four successive cup ties.

They host Hibernian in the Scottish Cup on Sunday and play Dundee United in the CIS Cup final a week later - with the second leg of their UEFA Cup clash against Bremen in between.

While Rangers are focusing on knock-out ties in the immediate future, the SPL remains their priority as they bid to stop Celtic winning a third successive title.

Broadfoot has been in the thick of the action in recent weeks after his appearances in the first team had threatened to run dry.

The Scotland B international had played only one SPL game before the end of January, but the sale of Alan Hutton has seen him reintroduced to the team at a crucial time.

"This time last year I was fighting a relegation battle," said Broadfoot.

Reviews: Preschool to Grade 4

When he takes his horn outside, everyone in the entire community is annoyed, so Ollie retreats to the country, into the middle of an open field. Soon cows gather around him. The farmer claims the playing will sour their milk so Ollie must move on. He walks to the shore where he and his horn get into a boat and row far out to sea. When he gets out among the rocks, he discovers that the bell buoy is not where it should be, and the fog is rolling in. So once again Ollie begins bellowing out his tune and saves a cruise ship from hitting the rocks. The young hero is given a medal and a scholarship to a music school "that is so far from our town that nobody will be disturbed anymore." This title was originally published in 1950, and Yaccarino's new illustrations retain the look of that era. The colors are uniform and flat throughout, and Ollie wears a navy suit with short pants and a bow tie.

Council considers Airport Zoning Overlay Tuesday

Salisbury City Council will hold a public hearing Tuesday to make some clarifications and corrections to its recently adopted Land Development Ordinance.

The council also will consider adding an Airport Zoning Overlay at the Rowan County Airport.

In a memorandum, the planning staff has reminded council members the new ordinance "is a working, organic document and not cast in stone."

"Staff recognizes that several — possibly multiple — text amendments will come before the Planning Board and City Council in the early months following adoption," the memo continues.

"Most of these early text amendments will address clarification, correction or interpretation issues."

The council meets at 4 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, 217 S.

Station Leaders Talk About WISC-TV

Some years ago, our vice president and general manager David Sanks was addressing a company meeting after months of work on the station's mission and vision statements. At the end of his presentation, Sanks summed up the most important goal, indeed the only goal that really mattered: "Keep Liz happy!"

Sounds like something you'd say about a tyrant, but no. Elizabeth Murphy Burns -- Liz, to all -- is simply one of the most respected executives in broadcasting and one of the best-liked employers in any industry.

"She's the perfect television station owner, in my opinion," says a national industry observer. "She's got her eye on the bottom line and her mind engaged on the whole panoply of business, and she lets her managers do their jobs."

We couldn't agree more.

Feb. 27, 1812: Rage, Rage Against the Industrial Age

1812: The poet Lord Byron makes an impassioned speech before the House of Lords in an attempt to convince Parliament not to enact the death penalty against the Luddites. He fails.

The Frame Breaking Act made it a capital offense for anyone convicted of "machine breaking," the willful destruction of mechanized looms and cloth-finishing machinery and other new devices that were eliminating jobs.

The Luddites were a loose association of craft workers, especially croppers and weavers, who saw coming industrialization as a mortal threat to their livelihoods. They took their inspiration, and their name, from the folkloric figure of Ned Ludd, who was said to have smashed a couple of stocking frames (knitting machines) in the late 1770s.

The movement began in early 1811, with a series of letters sent to factory owners and craft employers in the Nottingham area, calling on them not to install the new machines.
