Sundance: Stars, snow, and social cyborgs

Back in the early days of the Sundance Film Festival, when video was considered an emerging technology, there were independent filmmakers, and there were technologists. The two didn't typically go hand in hand.

Fast forward to this year's festival, which starts Thursday and will for the first time feature a 3D film, and indies and techies are one and the same. These days, it's near impossible to be the former without being the latter, what with the conveniences and opportunities that come with the likes of high-definition cameras, advanced editing software, and the Internet as a distribution tool.

So it's no surprise that the 2008 festival--an increasingly star-studded 10-day indie-film showcase in snowy Park City, Utah--has stepped up its technology-related programming.

Unstrung is in a unique position to offer this entirely new concept in technology publishing. In May 2005, our parent company, Light Reading, launched LRTV, establishing a loyal following among visitors, who have viewed more than 175,000 documentaries and interviews (an average of 9,200 per week).

Unstrung TV offers the same exciting format as LRTV. Each week, new programming will debut on the Unstrung homepage, where 102,000 unique monthly visitors can view it.

Everything on Unstrung TV from the camera operators to the graphics and editing is as required to meet the stringent quality standards of broadcast television.

Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence

They ask how we can speak of free elections when the Saigon press is censored and controlled by the military junta. And they are surely right to wonder what kind of new government we plan to help form without them, the only party in real touch with the peasants. They question our political goals and they deny the reality of a peace settlement from which they will be excluded. Their questions are frighteningly relevant.

Here is the true meaning and value of compassion and non-violence, when it helps us to see the enemy's point of view, to hear his questions, to know of his assessment of ourselves. For from his view we may indeed see the basic weaknesses of our own condition, and if we are mature, we may learn and grow and profit from the wisdom of the brothers who are called the opposition.

Unique entries: Camden Iron makes custom-designed steel gates for ...

In many of Camden's designs, the colors change depending on the viewer's vantage point. Once the gate is completed, it is given a clear-powder coat, adding protection and sheen. His gates have a three-dimensional quality to them. A horse's mane ripples on one gate. In another, six pieces of metal form a cowboy's hat on a rider leading a team of pack horses loaded with elk. In another, fish seem to wriggle as they swim through the water. Details on the gates are designed to be seen from both sides. Camden even adds flourishes such as pine cones. He's built about seven gates so far, with prices ranging from $30,000 to $48,500.The gates take several months from initial consultation to final installation. He said he's ended up friends with his clients, going hunting or fishing with them."There is nobody doing what I do with gates," Camden said.

Look homeward, Gen X

Many are first-time home buyers who don't have a home to sell; others may already own property but are planning on keeping it as an investment. It's a generation that knows what it wants."

And Gen Y is right on their heels. The Massachusetts real estate organization's recently published profile of the 2007 sales year showed the median age of home buyers to be 39 years old. But of first-time home buyers, nearly half - 49 percent - were between the ages of 25 and 34.

And it appears that Gen Yers - loosely, those born during the last two decades of the 20th century - are taking a cue from their predecessors and becoming homeowners at even younger ages.

In fact, Gen Yers may be buying the old lofts and converted condos Gen Xers are selling as they decamp to the suburbs, said Kathy Sheehan, senior vice president for GfK Roper Reports, a consumer survey company in New York.

Sorcery killers at large

He said police under his command would not take sorcery-related killings lightly.

Cactus Pryor battles Alzheimer's

Writing a piece used to take me five minutes. It takes me a day now," he says.

"Sure, he gets frustrated," says son Don Pryor, who also works at KLBJ and shares commentary duty with his father. "I look at it with the perspective that it takes me two or three days to write one."

"Cactus at one-quarter speed is what the rest of us are at full speed," Davis Pryor says.

Writing and relying on his recollection of Austin's rich history is good for Pryor. "Having difficulty remembering a password is quite typical, but his writing skills will remain intact because whenever he writes, it will be about things familiar to him like his distant past," says David Lipschitz, a leading geriatrician, chairman of the Ronald W. Reynolds Department of Geriatrics and director of the Institute on Aging at the University of Arkansas.
