AltadeƱa students take morning announcements to the next level

Each morning the broadcast club at Altadea Middle School meets 45 minutes before school starts to prepare for their daily morning announcements, broadcasted live into each classroom during first period. And they couldn’t be more thrilled. "Sometimes I have to boot out some students because I don’t want them to burn out," multimedia teacher Glenn Nienabor said. "I’d rather have them here for all three years then quit when they’re in sixth grade." Nienabor worked as sports reporter for the Mesa Tribune for seven years before he began his teaching career at Kyrene de la Colina Elementary School. It was at Colina where the broadcast club originated, and when he was asked to transfer to Altadea four years ago he had no intent of giving it up. "One of my conditions, so to speak, was that I could continue doing the morning announcements and the broadcast club," he said.

We'll pay the piper if we like the tune

Industry figures show that although album sales were down last year, digital sales worldwide were up 40% - hardly evidence of unstoppable piracy.

In South Korea, which has been plagued by piracy, digital sales have soared and now account for more than 60% of the market. In Japan, full-track downloads to mobile phones account for 40% of all sales value. Why? Because there is an easy payment system - one that doesn't involve operators getting up to £25 a track in data charges, as can happen here.

The industry should accept there are plenty of other reasons why conventional sales are falling, of which piracy, unacceptable though it is, is only a part. Youngsters have other claims on their time, from computer games to watching DVDs. Part of the fall may be due to a lull in top-class albums.

Bathinda, February 14

Around 6,000 to 6,500 tonne of coal is the daily requirement and if all the units work, 440-megawatt power is generated.

TNS: The PSEB has claimed that the GNDTP achieved a record generation of 2,795 lakh units in October 2007, which is the highest monthly generation in the last 20 years. Is there any pressure on the plant to produce more?

A.S. Mokha: Well yes, as you know the power demand is increasing day by day. So, the pressure is always there.

TNS: Is there any modernisation plan for the 33-year-old power plant?

A.S. Mokha: The Unit-I and the Unit-II have already been renovated. For the Unit-III and Unit-IV, orders have been placed with the Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited (BHEL) and by the end of this year, renovation will start, which will also reduce pollution.

Ever get the feeling you've been ad?

Many in the industry would question their reliance on TV campaigns which cost money and it's questionable whether people actually see them. "Changes in TV mean that fewer people watch commercial terrestrial TV and the new satellite and digital channels are usually impossible to get regional-specific ads on. "There is little doubt in the industry that if the SNP or Lib Dems got in, advertising spend would be substantially cut." But he added: "In a way, Tesco has it easier in that it's easier to measure whether things are working, you're either attracting more customers or you're not. "The Executive tackles issues in which success is hard to measure or might take years." The Scottish Conservatives' finance spokesman, Derek Brownlee, said the Lib-Lab pact had little to show after spending a "fortune" on advertising over the past eight years.
