Aug. 2, 1873: San Francisco's First Cable Car Conquers Nob Hill

1873: Andrew Hallidie tests the first cable car in San Francisco.

Hallidie is said to have conceived his idea in 1869 while watching a team of horses being whipped as they struggled to pull a car up wet cobblestones on Nob Hill. They slipped and were dragged to their deaths.

It so happened that Hallidie's father held the British patent for wire-rope cable and when the son came to the Gold Rush fields he put it to use hauling ore-laden cars from mines. So it wasn't too much of a stretch for him to envision horseless cable cars carrying passengers up the steep slopes of San Francisco's hills.

He formed the Clay Street Hill Railroad and was awarded a contract to build the city's first cable-car line up Nob Hill. Fourteen months later, on Aug. 2, the first cable car made its way up Clay Street.

A New Low for Hillary Clinton

Now he is spouting that the popular vote is what the superdelegates need to vote on. Hmmm which is it? Obama's biggest advantage against ANYONE is the MEDIA is on his side! Obama needs less of "yes we can" and a lot of 'how he can'. We need experience in the Oval Office and Obama does not have it. Vote Hillary! She is a candidate of action…he is a candidate of words. We need experience in these hard times.

Burpee admits abduction/assault, police report

Todd David Burpee told Palo Alto police detectives that he beat, threatened to kill and sexually assaulted a young woman last week because he was angry after a fight with his fiancee.

"It could have been anyone. It could have been a guy. I was just mad," he told Palo Alto police detectives Sal Madrigal and April Wagner after his arrest Thursday night in San Jose, according to a thick police report filed Tuesday morning with the Santa Clara County Superior Court in Palo Alto.

Police also say that Burpee wrote a letter of apology for the attack when they were interviewing him.

Burpee's chilling account of the attack on the 17-year-old Gunn High School student included details of how he stood by the door of the complex shortly after 3 p.m. Oct.

Coaches look for edge with sideline gadgetry

In the age of iPhones, Blackberrys, high speed Internet modems and every other technological advance never even dreamed of in the days of "Star Trek," high school football has joined the wave.

For fans on Friday nights and Saturday afternoons, the focus is on the 22 athletes on the field. But just outside the lines there's an ongoing technological revolution.

Equipment checks on game day go far beyond helmets and pads. Video cameras, audio headsets and laptop computers allow coaches to gather, communicate and analyze information faster than ever.

Far from camera shy

Film has largely gone the way of the dinosaur as the VHS tape is making way for the recordable DVD, and coaches end the practice day working with a machine that makes three DVD copies of a game at a time, all in about five minutes.

21 years on - freedom for Kenny Richey

Being released into the American society might has drawn a different response from the judiciary. This just demonstrates how far left the centre point of reference in his country has become. Idolisation of suspected child killers, appeasing muslim extremists and bomb plotters , allowing marriage betwen girly men, indoctrination of our school children into the supposed "horrors" of the alledged global warming. It's all very depressing, but very typical of a far left agenda. .

An ambassador against fear

Silber may be popular, but he is wrong.

"Most people with Down syndrome have IQs that fall in the mild to moderate range of retardation. Some are so mildly affected that they live independently and are gainfully employed," says the National Institutes of Health, the federal agency that speaks with authority on this issue.

"Most of the health problems associated with Down syndrome can be treated, and life expectancy is now about 55 years," says the March of Dimes.

And giving birth to a child with Down syndrome or cystic fibrosis or muscular dystrophy or mental retardation is not a "horror." Not according to every woman I know who has given birth to a child with these disabilities.

It takes a long time to alter public perception, to dispel these untruths.
