R. Queisser: Does "Faulty Planning" by Pentagon Surprise Anyone ...

Jane Stillwater: Does prayer really work? "No." (2 comments) At the rate I've been wearing my knees out, if prayer really worked, we'd have PEACE in the world right now. But maybe peace will come through the back door -- because America simply can't afford "war" any more. And maybe my appeal to the Pentagon to reinstate my embed will come through. And maybe Desperate Housewives will get back on the air and...maybe in 2008 we won't just elect "More of the Same". Not a prayer.

Silicon Still Solar’s Biggest Foe

China-based LDK Solar's stock was down more than 6 percent at the market close, and shares of California-based SunPower dropped nearly 4 percent.

New Energy Finance analyst Nathaniel Bullard said those solar companies with silicon-supply contracts in place will fare better than those without. The research firm predicts the limited supply of the critical material will continue until mid-2009, when lower silicon prices should pass through to lower module prices.

In the meantime, Mr. Bullard said the global market for silicon has little transparency and prices are highly discretionary. That means companies with longer-term relationships get better prices, and new entrants have little bargaining power because the deals are hidden, he said.

Underwood defense attempts to save his life

The jury convicted him Friday for the 2006 murder of Jamie Rose Bolin.

The jury now must decide whether to give Underwood life in prison with parole, without parole or death.

Wayne Woodyard, one of Underwoods court-appointed attorneys, said the defense would focus on Underwoods shyness, depression and the frustration he encountered as a boy.

No one will come forward to tell you he is insane, Woodyard said.

Assistant District Attorney Susan Caswell said the states opening statements that Underwood deserved the death penalty because it is the only appropriate and just punishment for the murder of Jamie Bolin.

She added all the evidence from the first half of the trial, including Underwoods graphic videotaped confession after his arrest, could be used in the jurys decision.

Coroner says artist Stephen Garrett "Static" died from complications ...

I will cherish your memory. To your wife and children God broke the mode when he was made. I pray that your memories comfort you in your time of need. This was a great man and he will forever be greatly missed..........CHEERS 2 U my homie 4eva NAENAY

I would like to send my prayers and sympathy out to Steve's family and all the members of the group Playa. I did not know Steve personally. But feel like I know him now. When Mark Gunn played all the songs that he has produced on the radio on Tuesday I feel like I know him now. When I heard that he was a member of the group Playa. I felt even closer to him. The music that he has produced and written, I think that someone should make a CD of some of the great music that he made while he was here on earth. We all don't know when or how we will leave this old world.

Norwegian broadcaster: P2P experiment "extremely positive"

Solheim said in an interview (republished on NRK's blog in English) that the experience will likely "clear the rights for this kind of distribution of more content."

Since the experiment's inception just over a month ago, Nordkalotten 365 has been downloaded over 90,000 times—shocking to NRK, since Norway is a small country of only 4.6 million. Not only that, but the people downloading have been good torrenters too. The files have had ratios close to 95 percent, which Solheim said saved license fee payers 95 percent of all distribution costs. "People are happily seeding the files," Solheim said.

There was also less resistance to the project than he thought, once the network was able to get the message across that BitTorrent isn't "illegal." Solheim said that the managers of Nordkalotten 365 were surprisingly open to the idea, even composing their own music to avoid dealing with licensing fees.

Sundance: Stars, snow, and social cyborgs

Back in the early days of the Sundance Film Festival, when video was considered an emerging technology, there were independent filmmakers, and there were technologists. The two didn't typically go hand in hand.

Fast forward to this year's festival, which starts Thursday and will for the first time feature a 3D film, and indies and techies are one and the same. These days, it's near impossible to be the former without being the latter, what with the conveniences and opportunities that come with the likes of high-definition cameras, advanced editing software, and the Internet as a distribution tool.

So it's no surprise that the 2008 festival--an increasingly star-studded 10-day indie-film showcase in snowy Park City, Utah--has stepped up its technology-related programming.
