NLCC honors Wright

Smith and Co-Lin founded the NLCC in 1990.

“Richard Wright was born on a plantation a few miles east of Natchez in 1908," she said. “Though he had only a ninth-grade education, and though he had to overcome desperate poverty, he achieved international fame for his writing."

Wright died in Paris, France, in 1960.

“The NLCC is kicking off a world-wide tribute to Richard Wright this year. We expect large crowds, including numerous Wright relatives from across the country."

Wright is renowned for such works as the novel, “Native Son;" the fictionalized autobiography, “Black Boy;" and a collection of stories, “Uncle Tom's Children," which was chosen Book-of-the-Year in 2008 by a statewide project called “Mississippi Reads."

“Since 1940, when “Native Son" sold hundreds of thousands of copies in a matter of weeks, many of his books have been bestsellers and continue to sell," said Jerry W.

Is an offline version of Silverlight coming at MIX next week?

Posted in:

Microsoft Silverlight AIR

There have been rumors for a while and today TechCrunch says they've been hearing that an offline version of Silverlight is coming to compete with Adobe AIR. Currently, despite a lot of comparisons in the tech media world, Silverlight and AIR have absolutely nothing to do with each other. Silverlight competes with Flash Player, a product that has been around for a very long time. But maybe that's changing.

What they'll most likely do is release an "offline" version of Silverlight that uses SQLite. It would be something like Google Gears where they install the database with the runtime then developers can write data to it and take their Silverlight applications offline.

Yahoo, MSN Brands Could Both Survive A Microsoft Buyout

Microsoft would be better off continuing to offer both Yahoo and MSN sites to maximize traffic and ad dollars, says Jonathan Hurd, director of Altman Vilandrie & Co., a business consulting firm.

"This deal is really about advertising and monetizing eyeballs," he said. "You want to see both of these brands continuing, so they don't lose any of these users."

Combining Yahoo and MSN services such as finance, real estate, video, travel, e-mail and instant messaging would be a tough but potentially rewarding process, says Shahid Khan, a partner for IBB Consulting Group.

"There would be a lot of redundancy there," he said. "It would take two to three years to get it done."

Yahoo ranked as the Web's top property in the U.S. in December, with more than 183 million visitors to its sites, according to comScore Networks.

Olympics: Five divers seeking to join Bryan in Beijing

KUALA LUMPUR: The number of Malaysian qualifiers for the Olympics is expected to increase drastically when our divers compete in the 16th FINA World Cup in Beijing from Feb 19-25.

Of the divers, five – Yeoh Ken Nee, Rossharisham Roslan, Leong Mun Yee, Elizabeth Jimie and Pandalela Rinong – have been identified as having the potential to do well at the World Cup, which is the last platform to qualify for the Olympics.

So far, seven athletes have qualified for the Olympic Games on merit. They are diver Bryan Nickson Lomas; archers Cheng Chu Sian, Wan Mohd Khalmizam Wan Abdul Aziz and Mohd Marbawi Sulaiman; taekwondo exponents Elaine Teo and Che Chew Chan; and pole vaulter Roslinda Samsu.

Yesterday, the National Sports Council’s (NSC) aquatics manager for elite athletes, Jennifer Yong, said that it was possible for Malaysia to have the biggest number of divers at the Olympics as the top 18 semi-finalists in the individual competition of the World Cup will make the cut.

Jennifer said that 14-year-old Pandalela, the country’s top junior diver, was their best bet for an Olympic berth in the 10m platform.

“She is our best bet to make the grade in the World Cup.

Renowned journalist to speak on global issues

The School of International and Area Studies and the office of the president, along with a dozen other OU organizations, is sponsoring the Dilemmas of Global (In)Security Symposium. Nine speakers will address global topics including antiterrorism, genocide and weapons of mass destruction.

Nicholas Kristof, a columnist for the New York Times who helped bring international attention to the situation in Darfur, will be the keynote speaker tonight in the Robert S. Kerr Auditorium of Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History.

Natalie Reese, international and area studies junior, said hearing Kristof speak tonight will be one of the highlights of her college career.

The Weedpatch Gazette

Still, anything concerning an afterlife remains only speculation and a matter of beliefs including those of Jesus. For me, life on earth is enough of a living hell without the prospect of being plunged into the eternal flames of the "lake of fire" when I die. And no one sensitive to the amount of human suffering throughout the world can fail to understand my thought on the subject. Sure, I can hope this is only purgatory rather than hell; that the evil I have done will be purged here rather than being consigned to the fiery pit and I may yet rejoin loved ones and friends in a heavenly hereafter. But as I said, no one has come back from the other side to either assure or condemn me, and I consider religious people of whatever belief system pontificating on the subject to be delusional at best.

Weak banks, carmakers end European scrips rally

European stocks dipped in early trade on Friday, falling for the first time in five sessions as banking shares slipped on renewed worries over the global credit crunch.

Geopolitical concerns following the assassination of Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto also dampened the mood in equity markets around the world.

Europes benchmark index is up 1.4 percent on the year, on track to record its worst annual performance since 2002.

HSBC was down 0.9 percent, HBOS down one percent and Credit Suisse down 0.5 percent.

Banking shares have been hit in recent months by a squeeze in the global credit market, and investors fear that financial institutions have not yet unveiled the full impact of the debacle in the U.S. subprime mortgage market on their books.

What Harry said when he was there

Yeah you've got the 105 guns up there that are firing down here, so, you know, you hear the bangs but you don't see what's going on so it's nice to get down here and actually be part of it and actually help."And obviously my job being a JTAC means that I'm needed around the place as are other JTACs to actually support and help out troops that come under contact."Is it very different doing it in anger in the field than it has been doing your job in exercises?"Yeah, it is slightly different. A lot of the time the guys are engaging invisible firing points because the Taliban are so good at hiding in their trenches "It is somewhat like what I can imagine World War Two to be like, as you saw on JTAC Hill it's just no man's land, they pop up their heads, they poke their heads up and that's it."If the guys are coming under a lot of fire then I call the air in and as soon as the air comes up they disappear and just jump down these holes or go into their bunkers." So it's a very strange reality really."As a soldier this is what it's all about isn't it?"Yeah, this is what it is all about, what it's all about is being here with the guys rather than being in a room with a bunch of officers."I'm in here with all the guys, most of them are artillery guys basically doing a swap over with the other ones on JTAC Hill, staging on staging off, doing a week because it's quite a lot of graft up there, supposedly."It's good fun to be with just a normal bunch of guys, listening to their problems, listening to what they think."And especially getting through every day ...
